The Floyd County Museum is not interested in drop-off or mail-in donations unless museum staff has been contacted and have discussed the items being donated. We currently are strict about only intaking a small amount of items that truly represent new and unique additions to our already large collection. We would appreciate a phone call before you bring a donation in to assess whether or not your item is worth considering.

The Floyd County Museum collects items related to the history of Floyd County, Iowa. If you are interested in donating objects to the Museum, please read the collecting criteria below to see if your item qualifies. Please contact the Collections Technician by calling 641-228-1099 or emailing about your items before bringing them to the Museum.

*Due to staff workload, drop off donations will no longer be accepted.*

What kinds of items does the Floyd County Museum accept?

  • household items
  • clothing/accessories
  • tools/equipment
  • textiles
  • fine art
  • books
  • documents
  • photographs
  • modern items

What kinds of items does the Floyd County Museum NOT accept?

  • Newspapers or newspaper clippings
  • Trophies
  • Human or animal remains
  • Items with mold, mildew, fungus, or other communicable hazards
  • Items unrelated to Floyd County history

Does the Museum accept all donations?

Not necessarily. We may refuse an item if:

  • There is no significant connection to Floyd County
  • We have duplicates already in our collection
  • It’s condition is such that we cannot safely add it to our collection

Please contact us if you are unsure or have questions.

What makes an item historically valuable?

  • Evidential Value –> does the item represent something related to life in Floyd County? How might it show the changes over time?
  • Association Value –> was the item associated with a specific Floyd County person or event?
  • Condition –> is the item in good enough shape to serve as an example of life in Floyd County?

An item doesn’t have to meet all three points to be valuable. If one is strongly met, the other two may be less important.

What if I have doubts about donating an item or not?

The Floyd County Museum does our best to tell as many stories from our county as we can. However, due to space limitations, we can’t accept everything. Try to think about what might be interesting to your great-great-great grandchildren. If you’re still not sure, call us and ask or email the museum at fcmiowa@gmail.com with a picture of the item.
